Well, it has been awhile since my last post, but to be honest, Mikey's 30 page paper for the SMU International Law Review has kept us from being too much fun! Speaking of Law Review, Mike was awarded "Best Case Note" which is a HUGE honor. I am so proud of him!
Anyway, back to the real reason for this post: On Friday, February 12, 2010, Dallas, Texas had a REAL OFFICIAL SNOW DAY. I am a religious weather watcher and had been hearing Pete Delkus talk about potential snow all week long. However, from the sound of it, snow would arrive Thursday night, MAYBE accumulate 1-3 inches, and wouldn't stick around for long. While I kept my fingers crossed for a snow day, I didn't hold my breath as it seems that we had several potential snow days that were big huge let downs.
When I woke up Thursday morning, I didn't even think to check out what the conditions were like outside. Not to mention, every window in our house has floor to ceiling shutters that we keep shut at night. When I opened my front door to get to my car, I literally squealed and gasped. It looked like a true winter wonderland! Our yard was covered in snow, every roof was covered in snow, every car, every tree, the street, everything. AND it was snowing! Hard! Our little neighborhood looked like a Christmas Village.
I woke Mike up and demanded that he come outside to see the beautiful snow (Hey- I'm no snow expert, I'm from Texas, and I definitely wasn't sure if it would stick around long enough for him to get the full affect.) I think he was impressed, but being woken up at 7:00 am to go outside in your boxers in 32* was a little much for groggy Mike!
Unfortunately, I didn't get any phonecalls about school being cancelled, so I cleared off my car like one of those true Yankee Northerners and headed to school.
Of course, the snow storm made the kids act like they had taken shots of sugar before they came to school (not to mention we had a pep rally planned which makes them act crazy anyway) but I must admit that even I had a hard time concentrating. It was incredible! It literally snowed HARD all day long! Thankfully I had a lighter lesson planned for the day because I could not wait to get home once 3:50 came along. Here are some pictures of our house/street from when I got home:
Once Mikey got home, we pulled on thick jackets, gloves, and scarves (I even got to take advantage of the waterproof aspect of Uggs!!) and headed out to our backyard. Of course, Mike ran full speed outside and made about 50 snow balls elf-style to pelt me with as soon as I stepped out the back door on the deck. I think he got the hint to stop :) when I slipped and fell down after awhile. We also thought that Banks would make an ADORABLE snow kitty, so we brought him outside too. Banks did NOT like snow. As much as he tries to escape outside, I think he probably thought, "Seriously? You guys let me come outside in this?!" He pawed at it for about .495 seconds and then sprinted inside.
Mike and I continued our snow ball fight ( I even got some props about NOT throwing like a girl :) and then we decided to build a snow man. As true Southerners, we had no idea how to build one and didn't really get the memo about rolling the snow versus building it into a big ball like a sand castle. Needless to say, we made a nice frosty man complete with Christmas salt water taffy eyes, a Cheetoh nose, and a Swedish Fish smile.
At this point, my school district had not cancelled school. Mike of course was promising me that it'd be cancelled, but I couldn't completely let loose at our Blue Goose dinner. Thankfully, around 10, we got the call that school was officially cancelled.
On Friday, Mike and slept in and met Rami for lunch at Corner Market. We then went over to the Frat House (ahem, the house where I used to live with Mike and 5 of his friends. **Side note, yes, I know, I'm brave.) Campbell agreed to help us make another snowman. This time we got the hang of rolling the snow and were actually able to construct a really decent sized snowman complete with red plastic cup eyes, a Miller Light nose, a stick smile, pecan shell buttons, and a Mexican Sombrero. And yes, more snow ball fights.
All in all, the snow day was WONDERFUL. We got about 11.5 inches of snow total! It was so crazy to look outside and feel like we were almost on a vacation to somewhere new. It was so fun getting to play around like little kids in it too- I had only been in a real snow one time when I lived in Abilene when I was three! It was also neat that our snow day fell on the day of the opening ceremony of the winter olympics!
We were able to enjoy our snow weekend to the fullest. It also included a wintery Valentine's Day. Mike and I were pretty low key actually. We typically go to Al Biernats for a fancy steak dinner. However, this year we decided to save a little money and take advantage of a gift certificate that Mike's parents had given us awhile back. Because I wanted to enjoy some wine with dinner we went out on Saturday night instead of Sunday since I had to work Monday (and apparently 2 glasses of wine can give me a slight headache these days.) So, we had an Italian dinner at MoMo's and then watched some Mad Men and a documentary on the Basque region of Spain (where we want to travel someday soon, financially-willing!) It was a very lovely weekend!
On a side note, I will admit that as the snow began to melt on Saturday, I've realized that snow is definitely a lot more fun than slush. Ew- that stuff needs to leave asap!
